Tadanori Yokoo: River of Renga
- Yokoo Tadanori, who turns 90 this June, has in the latter half of his eighties embarked on a new undertaking. The starting point for this series of paintings, named renga (linked pictures) after the classical tradition of linked verse, was a group photograph taken with former classmates in his hometown of Nishiwaki, Hyogo Prefecture. With A Requiem of Memory (1994, collection of this museum), a painting based on that photograph, as its point of departure, Yokoo set himself the challenge of painting freely, unbound by any fixed theme. The painting from the day before led the Yokoo of that day in unforeseen directions, and over the course of roughly two years he completed more than 60 paintings. This series, first shown at the Setagaya Art Museum in 2025, is now presented in Kobe.
In closing, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Yokoo Tadanori for his tremendous contributions to this exhibition as well as all of the many others who honored us with their support and cooperation in realizing this exhibition.
